I’m always in the mood to try something new, especially when it’s a quirky typing spinoff of a beloved Sega classic. The recent release of the 3DS remake outside Japan (at last!) has brought the series to the fore once again, and one little tidbit from this translated interview was the existence of Typing Space Harrier for PC (Japan only of course), a barmy “edutainment” title very much in the mold of Sega’s equally nutty stable mate The Typing of the Dead.
So after the lovely Tinpotgamer and TepidSnake brought it up again on Twitter I got off my backside and went Googling for it. Luckily it didn’t take long to find an official playable demo and get it working, rushing over the familiar scenery and eventually taking down the oncoming enemies with a quick type of some related-but-a-bit-odd words and phrases (again, very much like Typing of the Dead).
Once you’ve died (which is rather quickly if you’re me) you get a screen showing how well you did, based on the accuracy and speed of your typing laid over a lovely piece of classic Space Harrier artwork as well as a reminder to buy the full game for just 4800 Yen when it comes out on the 28th of February… 2002.
I wasn’t going to include this screen because it’s a little dull – but I couldn’t help but chuckle at “Windows” being misspelled in software that’s all about typing things out correctly -
