Little oddities… Falcom don’t clean up after themselves!

While diving through the extensive animation files for Sora no Kiseki SC one day looking for the sprites of Estelle fishing (as you do) I came across this sprite strip (partial reproduction) showing a clearly very early and unfinished Estelle sprite in a few poses from all possible angles. Here’s a single sprite from it blown up by 200% -

If you’ve played the series at all it’s easy to see that although the basics are the same she looks quite different and the proportions aren’t the same as all the other sprites. Even if you haven’t played the game it’s pretty obvious that her shoes aren’t coloured at all!

So like anyone who thinks hitting “Random Page” on The Cutting Room Floor’s sidebar is a productive way to spend an afternoon I went and did a little more digging around and found a few other things that might be of interest such as….

Base character model guy! For some reason “Giku”, the name of Kloze’s pet falcon, appears above his forward facing sprites – possibly as an easy visual reference point? Here are a few sprites from his animation strip (Photobucket won’t preserve the entire strip, and in fairness even the most basic ones are ridiculously long).

The biggest tease though was this -

A debug mode icon, oh-so-casually stored with the title screen graphics sheet. Like the master hacker I am, I scuttled off to the save (or was it config? It’s been a while) file, added a “debug=1” line to it and… *dramatic pause* nothing happened. My expert powers of deduction entirely spent, all I can say now is that I know at some point Sora no Kiseki SC had a selectable debug mode, but I’ve got no idea how to access it, assuming it’s even possible from the retail version of the game in the first place.

I even found a few more unused bits and pieces in Xanadu Next too! There’s this rather odd skull-crushing animation found alongside a bunch of menu icons -

A completely unused set of menu icons that aren’t just in a totally different style but show items never seen in the game (full set here) -

And lastly an unused menu system that wouldn’t look out of place in Phantasy Star Online! No idea what they were planning with this one -

I have had a quick poke around a few other Falcom PC games, Dinosaur Resurrection and Monarch Monarch in particular, but I haven’t spotted anything unused in those yet. If you have and you’ve seen some leftovers Falcom didn’t want anyone knowing about please tell me!

Oh, and if you’re wondering how I got these wonderful bits in the first place; I used the amazing Falcnvrt program, a lovely little tool that can spit out the graphics and textures of just about any Falcom PC game you throw at it :)
